Takuhaibin, usually written 宅配便, is Japan's parcel courier system, and travellers use it to ship a suitcase ahead instead of carrying it. For most travellers the choice is simpler than the carriers make it look. You either ship the bag forward, meaning you will not see it until you arrive somewhere else, or you park it somewhere in Tokyo and collect it yourself, usually the same day. One warning up front: transit times for personal customers are not published. Yamato publishes delivery dates only through a per-address tool, and no public service table exists. The forwarding side depends on the bag's measured size, and the band is the greater of the three-side total in centimetres or the actual weight. Read the second table as a rule of thumb, not a promise: the crossover where forwarding becomes cheaper than storage sits somewhere around two days for an intercity lane, and immediately for any bag you will not need again in Tokyo at all. If the bag comes back to you the same afternoon, storage wins outright, because there is no forwarding product that returns a bag the same day.

The crossovers change at the extremes. A carry-on-sized bag stored for a few hours pays the same 1,205 yen as a 30 kg trunk, because storage pricing does not scale with size. Forwarding pricing does: a small 60 cm parcel costs ¥1,730 within Tokyo, while the same bag parked for one day costs 1,205 yen plus the walk. This is why the two products genuinely answer different questions, and why a single number never settles it.

How Do You Actually Hand A Bag Over For Forwarding?

The three hand-over points are a hotel front desk, a courier counter and a convenience store, and each has a hard cut-off. Convenience stores are the wildcard. Every Yamato page names only Seven-Eleven and FamilyMart for TA-Q-BIN; Lawson handles Japan Post parcels, not Yamato. Stores may refuse parcels over the 180 band, and the discounts stack in ways worth knowing: carrying the bag into a branch or convenience store yourself takes ¥100 off, a digital waybill takes ¥60 off, and two or more parcels to one address take ¥100 off each. A suitcase with a three-side total over 160 cm needs a mandatory, free oversized-baggage seat reservation on the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu and Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen lines; boarding without one costs a ¥1,000 fee once per journey. Since July 2025, the Tokaido sets also carry six reservation-free deck luggage corners per 16-car set, in cars 3, 5, 7, 9, 13 and 15. Choose forwarding when the bag is not needed again in Tokyo and the gap is two days or more. Choose same-day storage when the bag comes back to you, at 850 yen per bag per day plus the 355 yen fee. Choose the oversized-baggage seat when the bag must travel with you on a Tokaido Shinkansen. Coin lockers beat both for one cheap day, when a door is free and the bag fits.

The honest comparison includes coin lockers, because they are the default thing a traveller in Tokyo reaches for. Tokyo Metro runs one price ladder network-wide, ¥300 to ¥1,000, published identically across all its station pages; only the mix of door sizes varies. JR East's Multi Ecube lockers run ¥300 to ¥1,100 depending on station and tier, with a peak-season surcharge of ¥100 to ¥200 on the larger doors.
